Walking down at the Promenade at Como Lake is where a person should start. Take your time, don't let the touristic drive overcome you. Just slow down life and let your soul feast on everything that this place could offer. Look at the sun playing on the lake's water. Inhale the perfume of all the flowers coloring the streets. Look up and around you and greet the passing by people. Make a stop at a gelato- shop, sit at a small Caffè. Let your whole being live in the moment.
Next stop: Milan. You must get lost in this city. That would be the only way to experience it. With all the small streets full of well-dressed people, riding
cars that probably belonged to James Bond. Just sink into the atmosphere that of sunshine and warmth that surrounds Milano. It is inevitable, of course, to get to The Cathedral or also known as Duomo di Milano. At first I thought that it is overrated and that it would be over-populated. First one; totally wrong. My chin just fell down at the view of this magnificent building, and trust me I had my fair share of visiting cathedrals, churches, temples... Probably it is so impressive from the inside, but we didn't get in. As always, our goal was to get to the top of the highest tower. We were pretty sure that we'll get through the entrance soon enough, as we planned to climb the stairs. Elevators are for the weak! Sadly, it turned out, a big surprise was it not, there were really long queues for both stairs and lift entrances. Still, we tried to purchase tickets. The queue was going really fast and our optimisms too. Already at the ticket machines the truth hit us. They were selling no more. We were advised to come on the next day and to use the time until then to buy tickets online. We didn't have the time.
Getting to the Sforza Castle was pretty easy, following in almost straight line the street from across the Cathedral. We had no expectations and still the place surprised us. With its long brown walls, keeping the inner yard safe, the walk could be really pleasant as you enjoy the authentic gates. A later research showed that actually it could have been a nice idea to get in. My interests and understanding of art are not so big, but still some real, authentic works from Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci (who actually frescoed a few rooms of the castle, as by the order of the Lord of Milan and
the Castle Ludovico Sforza.) There is a huge, green park behind the Castle, where you could take a refreshing break from the heat. Almost at the end of it, the wonderful view of the Arc du Triumph will be in front of you. Or at least that is what we thought at the beginning, It turned out to be the Porta Sempione, which has a long history, dating back to the Roman Empire, used as a control to an important road. More recently, Napoleon rebuilt it and its purpose, as a significant road, basically connecting Paris and Milan. In a few words: this place has seen some of the most prominent events in the history of the city
On our last day in the region, we got a great tip from our host. It turns out that not far away was the amazing place of Sacro Monte di Varese. Take your time and enjoy every step of the way. I couldn't stop imagining how once the holly people walking up and down this road must have felt. For me it was freeing, relaxing, a feast for the eyes and the mind.
After you reach the small village of Santa Maria del Monte, go to the Sanctuary, put your camera down and notice every corner of it. I've seen so many cathedrals, churches and temples, but still this place mesmerized me!Then, ai would highly recommend making a small hike to the top of Tre Crossi. The view, the lakes, the stillness and peacefulness will show you an other side of life...You won't be sorry..
